Framework Convention Alliance

FCA is an alliance of nearly 500 NGOs from over 100 countries helping to develop and implement the world’s first global tobacco treaty, FCTC.

Half the people who smoke today will eventually be killed by tobacco. In fact, tobacco use is often described as the leading cause of death in the world.

To help combat tobacco’s insidious global grip, the Framework Convention Alliance (FCA) unites nearly 500 organisations (from more than 100 countries) in the fight for tobacco control.

These organisations work hard to implement the world’s first modern-day public health treaty – the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

The FCTC requires countries (known as Parties) that endorse the treaty to adopt measures that reduce the devastating health, environmental and economic impacts of tobacco.

These measures include:
• Strong legislation on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
• Mandatory warning labels on cigarette packs.
• Smoke-free public places.
• Strict regulations on tobacco product contents.
• Higher tobacco taxes.
• Fighting tobacco smuggling globally.
• Increasing and promoting tobacco prevention, cessation and research programmes.

FCA supports governments that sign the treaty, works to ensure the treaty’s measures are implemented by those governments that become Parties, and advocates for including tobacco control in global development plans.
